Styron won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature as well as the William Dean Howells Medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1968 as a result of The Confessions of Nat Turner. He also wrote Sophie's Choice in 1979 about a Holocaust survivor, which won the National Book Award in 1980 which in 1982 became a major motion picture nominated for five Academy Awards, with Meryl Streep winning as Best Actress.
